Elvis Presley's Awards

by Morgan Herring

Selling approximately 1 billion record units worldwide, Elvis Presley is one of the most successful artists that has ever lived.  Although the King died in 1977, his success was celebrated for years to come.  "Presley has been inducted into four music halls of fame: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1998), the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2001), and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame (2007)" (Hombach, 18).  Presley was the first artist to be inducted into all of these halls of fame.  In his lifetime, Elvis Presley was nominated for fourteen Grammy Awards by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science, of which he won three.  "He was just 36 when he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award" (Margerison, 3).  Six of Elvis's recordings have been inducted into the NARAS Hall of Fame" "Hound Dog" was inducted in 1958, "Heartbreak Hotel" was inducted in 1995, "That's All Right" was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998, "Suspicious Minds" was inducted in 1999, "Don't Be Cruel" in 2002, and "Are You Lonesome Now," which was inducted in 2007.  In 1986, Presley was the first recipient of the Golden Hat Award from the Academy of Country Music.  Between 1956 and 1977, Presley's successes were through the roof.  He received three Grammy Awards, three RIAA Platinum Record Awards, thirty-five RIAA Gold Record Awards, and had one hundred and six hits in the Top 40 Hits List.  Not only was Presley recognized for his musical talent, he was also seen as a "stand up guy" in the public eye.  One of The King's proudest moments was when the United States Chamber of Commerce named Elvis Presley as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Men of the Nation in 1970.  This award was a huge honor because it recognized personal achievement, humanitarianism, patriotism, and community service.  Elvis's extensive list of achievements are certainly impressive, but he sang because he genuinely loved to perform for people.
